The Bruce Peninsula Art Show was started 46 years ago by Stokes Bay artist Vince Elliott as a venue for local artists to exhibit their works of art. Years later, a committee of other interested artists and volunteers picked up the Show and kept it going, leading to today’s committee of seven local artists and volunteers. Those eligible to enter are permanent or summer residents of Grey/Bruce.
The Show is held in Lion’s Head, Ontario, traditionally at the District School on Moore Street, and always on the Civic Holiday weekend.
This year the Show runs from Friday, August 2nd, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. with the opening and ‘Meet the Artists’ Friday evening, Saturday, Sunday and holiday Monday, August 3rd, 4th and 5th from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the District School.
Over the years, the artists’ entry fees and commissions from sales have been used in the community, purchasing equipment for the District School and donations to the Hospital.
In the past few years the funds have been given as Bursaries to graduating students continuing in the arts at the post secondary level.
Each student who fills out the application form and meets the criteria receives a $400 bursary.
Part of their commitment is to exhibit their first year’s work at the Art Show. This year there are 5 bursary recipients.
